Whitehorse is a great little town. Well, certainly in the summer. I'm not sure I could handle the short daylight hours of winter. Lots of history here. The SS Klondike is definitely worth a stop. At free, the price can't be beat.
Anyway, the first day I took care of business and got the bike to the shop. Apparently the guy found a new freewheel and installed it an hour or so after I left, but nobody ever bothered to email me about it. It rained for a good portion of my 23rd day out anyway. So, I spent a good chunk of the day in the public library using the free WiFi for blogging and catching up. I think I'm going to sign up for a half marathon in Morristown, NJ the Saturday before Thanksgiving. 'Cause I don't want to lose any of this fitness I've regained. And, naturally, I'm going to find a bicycle race to do shortly after returning. Don't you all want to see how fast I'll be without any weight loaded onto my bike?? Well, I certainly do. I think I'll do a charity fund raising one. So, I hopefully I can get some readers to throw in a dime or two . . .
The Yukon River is gorgeous. The Millenium Trail is a nice way to get a peek.
But, nothing beats riding its waters. So, on my 24th day, after going back to the bike shop to find out what the story was and getting my bike back, I rented a kayak for a nice paddle. I cringed at the price for a bit. But, it was worth it. Once I got away from the city, I had the river to myself. I spied a bunch of falcon and eagles and might have caught some halfway decent flight shots. There isn't much like the calm of floating down a river by yourself or with a few like minded friends.
Maybe I'll have to plan an epic paddle for my next crazy adventure.
Anyway, I think my hand is healed enough for biking. I have full mobility. It only really hurts if I forget and try to pick up something heavy with it. It is still a little swollen, but I'm not worried about it. It is going down.
So, I have retooled my itinerary. I will not be doing quite so many long stretches on the bike. Though, I will still be ending with 2 days near 100 miles each (almost entirely flat or downhill). So, I should be getting some more hiking and paddling in. My next entry will likely not be posted until I make Haines Junction in 2 days.
Good luck! I'm glad you were able to get a new freewheel. I'd love to know how many miles are on that bike. I put somewhere in the neighborhood of, if I remember correctly, 3 or 4,000 miles in the time I had it. If that is the same wheel-hub, it was probably due for an upgrade.
ReplyDeleteIt probably was the same hub. I had thought about replacing it before I left, but for some reason I didn't. I know the front wheel is pretty new, but I can't remember doing anything with the rear.
